APG - Atlanta Airport Exhibition

I'm thrilled that "Serendipity #14" was selected by Juror Brian Piper (Freeman Family Curator of Photographs, Prints, and Drawings New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA)) for the Atlanta Photography Group / APG's Airport Exhibition 2023. The group exhibition will be on view at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) from September 2023 – January 2024. Please check it out if you are flying through Atlanta

This is an image of a small sun-pillar. Sun-pillars consist of ice crystals that form when temperatures plunge overnight and humidity is sufficiently high. When the sun rises the next morning, these ice crystals are illuminated and appear like light bubbles. When these ice crystals are less scattered, we call them diamond dust.

Preconceptions, Rediscovery, Covid

Hi all, the new issue of ELEMENTS Magazine is out! It features the works and writing of Jasper Goodall, Paul Wakefield, Mitch Dobrowner, Charles Cramer, Trym Ivar Bergsmo, and an interview with Joe Cornish conducted by co-editor Olaf Sztaba. I contributed an article "Preconceptions, Rediscovery, Covid".

• "Preconceptions" was the root cause of my creativity rut. Arthur Meyerson said in an interview that "I've always tried to avoid preconceptions. Otherwise, you're more likely to be disappointed by what you don't find and more likely to overlook the obvious... It's important to learn to play the hand that's dealt you."

• "Rediscovery" - A workshop with Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant reminded me why I photographed to begin with - for the love of nature and the joy it brought me.

• "Covid" - Without knowing it, they also prepared me for Covid, which hit less than six months after the workshop. The images shown here are what emerged after my struggles with preconceptions, set against the backdrop of the pandemic.

I'm excited to be interviewed by Chinese magazine 大众摄影 (Popular Photography). It is headquartered in Beijing and founded in 1958. The interview is in Chinese. I talked about how I began photography, my move to Tokyo, my philosophical approach toward photography, as well as what photographing nature has taught me about life.

世界越是动荡，越是驱使我在大自然中寻求平静。在阴天我会追寻一缕微光。在单色的冬日，我会热切地寻找一点色彩。在暴风雪中，我会焦急地等待片刻平静。阴阳作为中国的哲学概念，指出所谓相对的力量实际上是可以互补和相互依存的。它要求我们协调所有事物，以保障连续性和平衡性。

“Navigating Loss & Sadness Through Cherry Blossom Photography”

I’m really grateful to Ellyn Kail of Feature Shoot Magazine for making the time and effort to interview me and write in depth about my project Remembrance.

“In Ng’s work, there’s no sense of ‘up’ or ‘down,’ either. Through reflections, she invites us to walk on clouds. Sheets of fog make it hard to determine whether objects are very far away—or close enough to touch. In some cases, an impossibly shallow depth of field makes nearby objects seem just out of reach, like moments from a dream lost upon waking.

Ng’s pictures are like memory itself in that time and space don’t move linearly; they compress and expand. The past is present, and those who are gone become present once more. While making them, the artist felt the spirit of her mother beside her.”

I’m beyond thrilled to be interviewed by BBC’s “The Cultural Frontline” for their Sep 17 podcast on “Creativity and Mental Health”. Other guests include Spice Girl Melanie C, Nigerian artist Jonathan Chambalin, American Gen Z cultural journalist Alexis Oatman.

Photographing landscapes has been therapeutic for me. The vastness of the landscapes put things in perspective. I think that sadness like all emotions can become habitual. Photography was the new addiction that broke that cycle for me. The pain of losing someone and their absence never departs and comes back to haunt me every now and then. But I think I’ve learnt to better coexist with it and treasure the living. I am grateful❣️

My heartfelt thanks to ELEMENTS magazine, PetaPixel and the Grief Centre (New Zealand) for featuring my images and article. That was how the Cultural Frontline chanced upon my work.
